Holi is one of the oldest and major festivals of India. It is celebrated annually with great fun, joy and enthusiasm on the day of full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (February or early March) for two days.
Festival of holi
celebrated with different names (Holaka or Phagwa) and traditions in different
states. But sprit of joy and fun remains the same everywhere. Holi is also celebrated in Nepal, Bangladesh,
and Pakistan by Hindu population. In real, the Holi was an agricultural
festival celebrating the arrival of new crops.
Holika Dahan
Celebration:
On the evening of the
first day of Holi, people gather at important crossroads and light huge
bonfires, this ceremony is called Holika Dahan. The Days Before festival the People Start
gathering wood produced for lighting of the bonfire moment. Holika puja and Holika Dahan Muhurta is very
important for burn the Holi. Ash left after burn is also considered holy and
people apply it on their foreheads. They believe that the ash protects them
from many evil.
A Hindu festival, Holi
has various legends associated with it. The legend observe by the festival of
Holi involves an evil king named Hiranyakashipu. Holika was the sister of Hiranyakashipu.
Holika had a boon that no fire could ever burn her. Hiranyakashipu became
modest and started defy God after getting a boon from them. His son, Prahlada, was
a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He forbade Prahlad from worshipping Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap
wanted his son to be killed.
All attempts to kill
Prahlada failed, after that Hiranyakashipu finally decided to burn him with
Holika. Prahlad accepted the challenge and prayed to Vishnu to keep him safe. Holika
took Prahlad in her lap. When the fire started, each person watch in wonder as
Holika was burnt to ashes, while Prahlad remained completely unharmed. The
burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi.
Special preparation of
food for holi:
Many people give each
other gifts and Women start making early preparations for the holi festival as
they cook special meals for this time such as gujiya, mathri and papri, papads
and potato chips for the family and relatives. On This Festival, People enjoy
with many kinds of Drinks like Specially Thandai and Bhang.
Festival of Colors:
Holi is the celebration
of color, fun, masti and play music and dance. People throwing and applying
colored powder (gulal), colored water on friends and family, which gives the
holiday its common name "Festival of Colors". This festival
of color brings all people together and removes social gaps between rich and
poor, young and old, employees and employers, men and women. A common word
heard during Holi is: Bura Na Mano, Holi hai.
